Laser Therapy

HomeVeterinary ServicesLaser Therapy

Locust Valley Veterinary Clinic is thrilled to be able to now offer our patients laser therapy!

Laser therapy is a treatment modality that helps to reduce inflammation, decrease pain and aid in the tissue healing process. It provides a non-invasive, pain-free treatment option for a variety of conditions and ailments, both acute and chronic in nature.

While the idea of laser therapy has been around for some time, recent advancements in the technology have allowed for more widespread use and affordability. Laser therapy is commonly used to help reduce inflammation and pain in the immediate post-surgical period (soft tissue and orthopedic), as well as help treat and provide pain relief for conditions such as muscle strains/sprains, chronic osteoarthritic and neurologic conditions, dermatologic conditions (i.e, hot spots, lick granulomas) and periodontal disease. Furthermore, the use of laser may be beneficial in assisting to decrease the healing time of acute and chronic wounds.

Laser Therapy procedures are performed at West Hills Animal Hospital & Emergency Center by appointment.

How does it work?

Laser emits light energy (photons) into the tissues, which cause chemical changes to the cells. This in turn causes energy production and stimulation of the cellular tissue, resulting in increased blood flow to areas of injury, increased lymphatic drainage and ultimately decreased inflammation and pain. The treatment is administered through a non-invasive hand piece and treatment times are typically less than 5 minutes. There is no clipping of fur, no painful manipulations and no known side effects of treatment.

It is important to keep in mind that laser therapy may be recommended or offered as part of a larger treatment protocol by your veterinarian. It is often combined with other treatment modalities that your pet may already be receiving to further enhance the optimal outcome.

If you have questions about the use of laser therapy or believe that your pet may benefit from this treatment modality, please do not hesitate to ask one of our veterinarians about how laser therapy may benefit your pet.
